“Women Who Followed Jesus” now available on video

For those of us who shared the live presentation together, we know the impact of these women in our own lives today. Fourteen women throughout Christian history were selected from thousands or perhaps even millions of famous and unknown women whose lives illustrate spiritual authority. Here’s a brief video clip from a live presentation:

What these women have in common is a commitment to Jesus. They bring into living color the meaning of Jesus’ words, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it” (Luke 9:23,24).

Time to share the story

We’re still hearing the voices of those women from the presentation on “Women Who Followed Jesus” a couple of weeks ago. They remind us to zero in on the deep spiritual meaning of our own life purposes. They inspire us to have more faith in God than in popular opinions about us. They encourage us to live lives of unselfish love.

We are now ready to rent out a video recording for those who weren’t able to be with us in person.

Courageous women of faith

What an amazing afternoon!  So many names I wasn’t familiar with, such as Thecla, Blandina, Julian of Norwich, Mechthild of Magedeburg, Heidi Baker – and then names I knew, such as Mary of Magdala,  Anne Hutchinson, Ann Hibbens, Mary Baker Eddy, and Carrie Judd Montgomery – all names of women throughout history who felt a special calling to follow Jesus.  We heard all their voices and others in Shirley Paulson’s presentation this afternoon of “Women Who Followed Jesus.”

It was sometimes very disturbing to hear about the unthinkable hardships they went through because of the strength of their faith.  Would I have the same courage to stick with my convictions?  It gives one pause to consider.

Barb, Betsy, and Barbara Zeman

Especially touching was the presence of Barbara Zeman who is one of the contemporary women Shirley spoke of.  She is an ordained Catholic priest who has been excommunicated from the very Church she loves so much, because women are not permitted to be ordained.  Though I am not Catholic and don’t understand the details of the priesthood, Barbara’s sincerity and love in wanting to share her spiritual gifts with others moved me deeply.

Meet Mechthild, my buddy from the Middle Ages

If you think the name “Mechthild” sounds a little quaint, you’re right. She lived in the 13^th century, but I still think of her as my buddy. She’s better known as Mechthild of Magdeburg, because that’s the German town she lived in. Even though there wasn’t any such thing as blogging on an internet in her day, I get the feeling she would have been blogging with me if she were here today. She was so convinced God gave her something to say, she did everything in her power to get the word out.
