Maybe the first question that comes up concerning interfaith activities is, “what’s in it for me?” That’s important, for sure. And yet, “how does it help me give better?” also plays a big part in the world of interfaith discussions. Our expectation is that both receiving and giving will be big incentives for getting involved in our Interfaith Preparation meeting on May 1 (10:30 am at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Palatine).

Starting with the benefits for ourselves: Sincere conversations with those of other faith traditions bring out beautiful expressions of their devotion. Whatever motivates them to praise God, grow spiritually, love others, and be humble about it, is an inspiration to the rest of us. Careful listening to others also helps us understand the meaning of their lives. It’s pretty obvious that a better understanding of our neighbor inspires trust and strengthens relationships. Who doesn’t need an understanding neighbor, when so much of the world we live in doesn’t understand minority religious convictions? (more…)

It is good for those of us who love Christian Science, to think and pray out loud together about how to move forward with complete healing when medicine has become part of the picture. Even if it is not an element of our own lives, most of us have loved ones whose lives are very much affected by these issues. A healing that comes through the touch of Christ is an experience beyond human comparison. It deepens our relationship with God, and it awakens us to the reality of spiritual existence. Undoubtedly, everyone who has experienced healing through Christian Science treatment would prefer all healings directly through prayer rather than through medical intervention. We all have a divine right to spiritual healing regardless of where we are in our Godward journeys. (more…)

If you like what you’ve been hearing about the Christian Science Fellowship-Metro Chicago, and you like the idea of contributing whatever you can – then you qualify for joining the “leadership team.”

Five people from our first organizational meeting on October 8 in Oak Brook have signed on. That’s Davy Cady, Linda Kopec, Barbara Stout, Liz Vander Velde, Rob Wadleigh. We’re ready for more of you to join in.

We’re meeting again, Sunday afternoon, after our first fellowship worship meeting on November 8, at Shirley Paulson’s house, around 4:00 pm.

The focus of this meeting will be more in-depth conversation about our points of faith. The Next Generation Christian Science Fellowship from St. Louis has been using the term, “Covenant,” and we’ll discuss items along those lines. Even if you don’t think it’s the right time to join the leadership team, you’re still welcome to attend the meeting and share what you’re thinking about.
