We have a most interesting day planned, and we’re really quite excited about it! Events will be taking place Sunday, May 16, from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.
We’re taking our first steps in genuine interfaith dialogue, and in a comfortable, enjoyable environment. You’ll see there are three different events at three different locations. It would be great if you could be with us during all three, but you’re welcome to come to one, two, or all three of the events. If you’ve ever wanted to feel comfortable visiting a faith tradition different from your own, this is the time to do it! They’re expecting us, and we’ll share the experience together.
See summary of Swedenborgian beliefs.
What’s happening?
- 9:30 am – Attend the contemporary worship Service at the New Church (Swedenborgian) in Glenview.
- 11:00 am – Enjoy a potluck brunch and interfaith discussion at the home of Pastor Mark Pendleton (right next to the church property).
- 12:00 – Leave for Shirley Paulson’s house for informal talk about the morning
- 1:00 Christian Science Gathering (worship, prayer, and Bible Lesson study) at Shirley Paulson’s home in Glenview.
What will we talk about at the brunch?
You can even think ahead of time about the questions we agreed on together, to discuss around the table. Obviously there are no “wrong” answers. This is just a time to get to know each other and share whatever feels comfortable to share. Here are the three questions:
- What are one or two ideas, experiences, or events that got you most committed to your chosen faith or religion?
- In what way does your faith make you a better person, friend, spouse, parent, or citizen?
- What is one thing that you’d like to know from people in Christian Science/the New Church about their faith?
What should we bring?
- A dish to share at the brunch
- A Christian Science Bible Lesson Quarterly (if you have one) for the Gathering
- A Christian Science Hymnal Supplement (if you have one) for the Gathering
Do we need to RSVP?
It is not necessary to RSVP, but if you are planning to attend the brunch, that RSVP will help us with the planning. Just let us know here on the blog, or else call Sandi Justad, 708-422-7877. Come anyway, even if you forget to RSVP in advance!
Where is everything happening?
- 9:30 am – The New Church is located at 74 Park Drive, Glenview 60025 (847) 724-0120
- 11:00 am – Mark Pendleton‘s home is on the premises of the Church. If you come only for the brunch and discussion, ask for directions at the Church.
- 12:00 pm – The informal discussion at Shirley Paulson’s home is at 820 Glenview Road, Glenview 60025 (847)998-0663
- 1:00 pm – The Christian Science Gathering at Shirley Paulson’s home is at 820 Glenview Road, Glenview 60025 (847) 998-0663
I will be attending, hopefully for all the events, plus joining the band for the church music!~
Hi Sandi,
Your Interfaith Day meeting sounds so good. In December of 2001 (after the 9-11 New York twin towers event) we did an interfaith panel discussion, “Where is God in Times of Crisis? A Spiritual Response to Terrorism”, here in Dixon between a pastor of a local Christian church, a representative from a Muslim group, a representative of the Jewish community and our own lecturer. It was interesting and by all accounts a good discussion. In June we will be having another panel discussion, but this time an ecumenical group of three other Christian churches and with our lecturer Marceil DeLacy. We look forward to working with these churches through a discussion of, “The Relevance of Prayer in Daily Life”.
Personally I would love to make your discussion to be able to participate in the outreach and understanding it provides. With our local church duties I cannot attend.
It is so inspiring to see the progress your group is making bringing Science more into the open and being so open to more spiritual seekers. Keep us posted on your programs—my hope is we might learn from you to bring some of your fellowship to our own community.
Regards,
Jack Coleman

I have 15 supplements! How many do you want me to bring?
Hi Linda! We’re thrilled you and Sandy will be making the trek up from St. Louis to join us for our interfaith activities and Gathering. Thanks for the offer of the Supplements – why don’t you bring 10 with you. Looking forward to sharing together!
